Harvesting Pumpkins
Our first graders have been learning about the life cycle of plants and parts of a plant in Science. At the end of last year as Kindergarteners, they planted pumpkin seeds in their garden. This fall, as first graders, they got to harvest their pumpkins! This hands-on unit integrated reading, writing, math, science and art as students were fully immersed in their plant’s life cycle. For the remainder of the fall season, all students at Shoesmith will engage in academically rich activities in our beautiful gardens.
Shoesmith Glee Club!
The Shoesmith Glee Club performed at the Starbucks on 1530 E 53rd Street on Saturday, April 2nd at 6:00PM. Patrons, families, and friends were treated to a short set which included an Adele Medley and “Rather Be” by Clean Bandit. Founded and directed by MSU intern teacher, Ms. Cheryl Graff, the Shoesmith Glee Club formed to provide a creative venue for students while teaching proper vocal technique and performance quality. The club meets once a week to learn and rehearse musical selections. Their debut performance was at the Winter Assembly and they have since been preparing for their first community performance at Starbucks. We hope to expand the club next year! |

G.O.A.L
What is G.O.A.L.? Formerly StreetHawks, G.O.A.L. introduces hockey at the grassroots level to kids who may not otherwise have the opportunity to try hockey. The program brings hockey to schools, community centers and other places where kids can play in safe, structured environments. To make the game more accessible, the Blackhawks provide equipment, tips on how to grow the program and instruction from youth hockey coaches. The skills that youth learn through sports like hockey—teamwork, focus, the value of hard work, practice and perseverance—will benefit them in school today, in college tomorrow and throughout their lives.

Run Shoesmith Run!
The cross country team competed in their first meet at Washington Park. Yasmine Jones, Mikayah Sardin, Bryce Sayles and Matthew Purches all ran cheered on by Averi Sayles and their coaches. It was a great first meet and the athletes did wonderfully. |
This past Tuesday Shoesmith's varsity and JV cross country runners attended the Network 9's Regional Finals. Our eight varsity runners competed against top runner's from other schools in the network in rain and cold. Bryce Sayles qualified for the City Championship race with a time of 6:53 minutes. While our JV didn't get a chance to run, they were able to come out and support the team and see the course. Great job everyone!

Spring is Finally Here!
Our first graders are doing some pre-planting set up in the Shoesmith flower garden on Friday. The class designed a layout for the garden in the classroom. Then, they set up stakes (tall plants in the back, shorter in the middle, smallest up front) with their names on them.

Common Threads in Back at Shoesmith
Students engage in healthy living through cooking classes Students in Ms. Keine's and Ms. Lovejoy's classrooms were asked to be the student voices for the Obama's Presidential Library Selection Committee. Ms. Lovejoy's students wrote very compelling letters and Ms. Keine's class put together this video. |
