Mrs. Schnall's Physical Education Class

Welcome to Physical Education!
A little about me: I am Jamie Schnall, the physical education teacher, and I am originally from Ohio. During high school, I played volleyball and was an active member of the band. I have coached volleyball, fast pitch softball, chess and speech.
My education: This will be my 21st year teaching. I hold an undergraduate degree from Capital University, double majoring in Health and Physical Education. My Masters of Education degree is in Sports Education. Additionally, I am certified in Driver Education and received my National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification in 2011 and 2020 in the area of Pre K- 8 Physical Education.
My class: Physical Education is fun. My goal is for all students to participate and have a positive attitude toward exercise. Health regulations permitting, students will participate in a wide variety of activities designed to keep them moving. Some of the sports we will play to develop skills will be: volleyball, basketball, soccer, football, kick ball, dodgeball, tennis and softball. Students 3-6 will participate in fitness testing using the FittnessGram tests and evaluation. These scores will be sent home at least once a year. K-2 students will be focusing on locomotor (running, walking, jumping, skipping, hopping, galloping, sliding and leaping), fine motor and gross motor development using a variety of games. In the event we are online learning, students will be using a variety of Youtube and online videos to practice skills. Many of the videos include fitness routines, dances and Yoga. Students will also focus on a variety of health lessons including nutrition, safety, anatomy, heart health and many more.
Dress: Please come to PE ready to play by wearing gym shoes. Students will not be safe to participate in sandals, open toed shoes, or boots of any kind.
Grading policy: Class grades are as follows: 55% Participation/Journals/skill checks, 15% Tests/Nearpod Lessons, and 20% class assignments and 5% projects.

Health Education
Health Education will be taught K-6 at the start of the 2nd semester in February. Health Education includes the CPS Safety Education Curriculum. If you have questions or concerns about this curriculum please feel free to contact me. I can email you the entire curriculum for your child's grade level so that you and your family can make the most informed choices. You have the right to opt out of part or all of the health lessons offered. Please review the materials to make the most informed choices. Some health lessons involve discussions about hand washing and basic hygiene which may be helpful lessons. Students who opt out of any part will be given an alternative setting and assignment.
Fitness Testing
The Illinois State Board of Education has signed into law Public Act 098-0859 which requires every Illinois school to utilize the FitnessGram physical fitness assessment to assess student fitness indicators beginning with the 2016-17 school year.
CPS is requiring all students grades 3-12 participate in fitness testing at least once this year and record the data. This data will be collected by the state of Illinois for the first time this year. This will not be new to your children as I have been using FitnessGram fitness testing with them grades K-6. Tests that will be submitted to CPS are: PACER, Curl-up, Push-up, Sit and Reach and Trunk Lift. You will receive copies of their results in May or June when fitness testing is complete. Although CPS is only requiring 5 tests, I assess the students using nearly all of the FitnessGram tests. I find using all 9 tests can provide a more detailed view of your child's fitness level.

PLANTS ARE GROWING!
I am spreading my love of plants and teaching the students in 104 all about how plants grow. Students have planted tiny, rooted plants and are taking turns watering and reading to them. Keep your eyes out for more pictures and ways we are using these plants to learn.
TECHNOLOGY ALERT!
5th and 6th grade students will be wearing heart rate monitoring technology during PE. We are using this new data to encourage participation, learn about how the heart works and to evaluate each workout. Check out the slide show below!
