Ms. Lane's 5th Grade
Dear Scholars and Families,
Welcome to an exciting year in fifth grade! My name is Ms. Lane, and I will be teaching math to our fifth grade scholars. It is my privilege to begin my fourteenth year of teaching in CPS, and seventh year at Shoesmith School. I began my career student-teaching at Shoesmith, and found my way back to The Hive after working at Pershing Magnet School in Bronzeville. I enjoy teaching intermediate grades because it is the time when children begin to establish their own identity, foster independence, and grow into young adults. Being a part of their lives at such a crucial time is a privilege, and a responsibility I do not take lightly.
Outside of school I’m mostly chasing around my two sons. This also means I drink a lot of coffee. I love to challenge myself and learn new things. Currently, I’m learning American Sign Language. My youngest son is hard of hearing which is what started my family’s journey in learning ASL. Another way I like to challenge myself is through exercise. I’m usually at a 5am fitness class before school starts, which again underscores my love for coffee.
I’m thrilled to be able to continue teaching many of the same scholars this year! I’m confident that we will be able to hit the ground running and pick up right where we left off last year in fourth grade! I am excited to meet and get to know new families and continue working alongside familiar families as well, so please stop by and introduce yourself if we have not already met, or just say hello! Communication is key to any strong relationship; therefore, you will receive many updates from me throughout the year, and I encourage you to reach out for any reason! Please join our class on Remind with the code @lanerm208 to receive class updates! Remind is a messaging site that will keep us in close contact and, hopefully, keep you feeling connected and informed. I look forward to working together to enable our scholars to achieve nothing less than greatness.
I can’t wait to start the 2023-2024 school year, and work together to foster critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and future leaders.
Yours in education,
Ms. Kelly Lane
